Hendrix

Hendrix is seeking is FOREVER home. This poor angel boy has been through it.

Lab/Shepherd. Male. 3-4 years old. 75lbs. Neutered, vaccinated, microchipped. House trained, crate trained. No Cats!

Hendrix was originally rescued from a high kill shelter in southern CA in 2021.

We fostered him for several months before a rescue found him an adopter.

Unfortunately in august I received a call that Hendrix had been picked up by animal control in rural Alabama. Halfway across the country from where is he was supposed to be. After several failed attempts by myself and local authorities to locate the adopters I started working on a plan to get him back to the west coast.

Hendrix stayed a sanctuary for a month while things were figured out. Now he is back with me as a foster.

He is an incredible dog. If I had was able to keep another dog I would just keep him. But sadly I am already at my limit.

Hendrix LOVES fetch. Especially in the water. He loves to swim. He knows “find it” if the ball is lost and he WILL find it. He was almost accepted into a search and rescue program in 2022. He loves hiking and going for runs in the morning. He’s an awesome camping and adventure buddy.

Hendrix loves people and playing with other dogs. He can play rough with dog friends but takes corrections from other dogs well.

He is a gentle giant with humans. He plays gently and knows “leave it” and “go away” for when play time is over. He is good with children, but would do best in a home with kids over ten due to his size and playfulness. He may unintentionally injure a small child by knocking them down.

Hendrix is extremely well trained at home. He is 8/10 on a leash.

He listens well. He knows sit, lay down, in your house (crate), leave it, out(leave whatever you’re messing with alone), place, hut (stop and come back), stay/wait, let’s go(keep walking), and all of the noises I make to get him to knock something off.

He sits for his food, he sits for his leash, and he sits and waits for the door. He won’t eat your dinner if you leave the room and tell him to leave it.

Hendrix’s only issue is his leash reactivity with other dogs. It’s getting steadily better but I am hoping with a solid home we can really turn it around. He was excited by other dogs on the leash when we were fostering him but when we got him back he had developed reactivity to other dogs on leash. He still loves to play with other dogs in the yard or at day care. But on a leash he is nervous. He must have had a negative experience with his prior family on a leash.

His leash reactivity is NOT the worst I’ve seen by far. But he is a big dog which can be intimidating for some.

If you can manage to pass the other dogs quickly, with a fair amount of space, all is well.

He is extremely ball/toy motivated and food motivated.

He is very easy to train, but he will need someone confident and committed to maintaining and managing his training.

I want him to be successful in his new home.

I am a shelter behaviorist, trainer and am working toward my national trainer certification. I am willing to work with Hendrix and his adopters on behavioral needs for the remainder of his life, free of charge.

Due to Hendrix’s chaotic past and size, I am looking for someone who has a home with a yard. Hendrix would do great with another friendly dog at home. But would also love to be your whole world.

I am looking for someone who has experience with large breed dogs and someone who is confident with their dog knowledge and skills. I am also looking for someone who is committed to taking this dog in for life. He has bounced around enough and he’s too cool of a dog for that nonsense.

Hendrix is an amazing and special boy and he deserves the best home. He has been through so much and remains kind and gentle and oh so loving.

He would make an amazing emotional support dog. He’s so incredibly smart and sweet.

Please send me a message if you are interested in meeting Hendrix and we can discuss the adoption process.

I am able to adopt him out anywhere in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Northern California, Northern Nevada, and southern British Columbia.

Thank you!
